Power characteristics are an important performance indicator of EVs, as well as an important indicator of EV battery cells. HPPC test, short for Hybrid Pulse Power Characterization Test, refers to the test of discharging and feedback (charging) pulses within the range of current and voltage available to the battery to characterize the dynamic power capability of the battery.
The main purpose of the HPPC test is to determine the following parameters as a function of depth of discharge (DOD):
1) Discharge power capability at the end of the 10s discharge pulse;
2) Feedback pulse power capability at the end of the 10s feedback pulse.
The table below is a general procedure for conducting a battery HPPC test.

Test steps |
Remarks |
01 |
Step 1: Place the cells in a constant temperature climate chamber at 25°C for at least 6 hours. |
Make sure that the cell temperature is the same as the ambient temperature. |
02 |
Step 2: Discharge the cells with a constant current of 1C rate to the termination voltage. |

03 |
Step 3: Place the cells in a constant temperature climate chamber at 25°C for at least 6 hours. |
- |
04 |
Step 4: Charge the cells with a constant current of 0.33C to the cut-off voltage, and then charge it with a constant voltage until the current drops to a rate of 0.05C, and then let it stand for 6 hours. |
- |
05 |
Step 5: Place the cells in a constant temperature climate chamber at target temperature for at least 6 hours. |
- |
06 |
Step 6: Tested according to HPPC test procedures. |
- |
07 |
Step 7: Repeat steps 1 to 6, set the target temperatures in step 5 to 0°C, 25°C and 55°C, respectively. |
Perform HPPC tests at different ambient temperatures |
Within a certain temperature range, as the ambient temperature decreases, the pulse power characteristics of the battery gradually deteriorate.
Kindly reminder: Under this test requirement, the core requirement for cell battery tester is to have a pulse discharge mode and a pulse charge mode.
